Details

The SupTronics X1000 is a compact NVMe SSD expansion board for the Raspberry Pi 5, designed to connect M.2 NVMe drives in 2230 or 2242 formats through the PCIe 2.0/3.0 interface. It supports blazing-fast data transfer rates up to 8 Gbps, making it perfect for high-performance storage needs.

Engineered to mount directly on top of the Raspberry Pi 5 like a traditional HAT, the X1000 includes a pass-through 40-pin GPIO header for full access to pins while remaining compatible with other HATs. Its low-profile design works seamlessly with the Raspberry Pi Active Cooler without compromising cooling efficiency. The included mounting holes and standoffs ensure secure installation, while a built-in blue LED clearly indicates read/write activity on your SSD.

You can boot your operating system directly from the SSD, dramatically improving application load times, file transfers, and overall performance — ideal for web servers, local media servers, or NAS builds.

Features

The SupTronics X1000 is fully compatible with the Raspberry Pi 5 and supports M.2 NVMe solid-state drives up to 4TB capacity in both 2242 and 2230 form factors. It delivers speedy data transfer through PCIe 2.0 at 5 Gbps or PCIe 3.0 at 8 Gbps, and works perfectly with the official Raspberry Pi Active Cooler without affecting thermal performance. A blue LED indicator displays power and drive status, while an integrated high-efficiency DC/DC step-down converter provides up to 3.5A to power your SSD. The stackable design allows mounting beneath other HATs, with power supplied through the 40-pin GPIO header and PCIe FFC cable. It supports HAT+ STANDBY power state for automatic shutdown when the Pi 5 powers off, though it is not compatible with M.2 SATA SSDs, M.2 PCIe AHCI SSDs, or other non-NVMe M.2 devices.

Specifications

Power Supply: 5 V DC ±5% via FFC & GPIO pin header, converted to 3.3 V max 3.5 A for SSD power
Ports & Connectors: PCIe connector (16-pin, 0.5 mm pitch); M.2 M-Key SSD slot
PCIe Cable Length: 30 mm
PCB Size: 65 mm × 56 mm

Compatibility

As with all M.2 NVMe adapters for Raspberry Pi 5, certain SSD models — particularly those using Phison controllers — may have compatibility issues. SupTronics specifically notes poor performance with the following: WD Blue SN550/SN580 series, WD Green SN350 series, and WD Black SN850 series. Additional models may be listed in online community resources.
